These terms cover the Twenty-Eight Years newsletter on Substack, at twentyeightyears.substack.com, published by Paul Bellchambers. By subscribing, you agree to these terms.
1. About this publication
Twenty-Eight Years is a personal newsletter documenting the writing of my debut novel of the same name, including draft extracts, craft essays, and process updates, published on the Substack platform. Extracts are draft material, not the finished book, and are shared for interest and transparency rather than as a polished, final text.
2. Subscriptions
- A free tier is available at no cost and includes a defined selection of content, as described on the Substack page.
- A paid tier is available on a recurring monthly or annual basis, at the price shown at the time of subscribing, and includes additional content such as extended draft extracts and acknowledgement in the published novel.
- All subscriptions are billed and managed through Substack’s own payment system (using Stripe as payment processor); refunds and billing disputes are handled per Substack’s own policies, available at substack.com/tos.
- I may change what is included in each tier, or pricing for future billing periods, with reasonable notice to subscribers.
3. Cancellation and refunds
You may cancel a paid subscription at any time through your Substack account settings; you will retain access until the end of the current billing period. Free subscribers can unsubscribe at any time via the link in any email. Refund requests can be sent to paul@twentyeightyears.com and will be considered case by case, in line with Substack’s own refund mechanisms and UK consumer law, including your statutory right to cancel a digital subscription within 14 days of first subscribing, subject to the usual exceptions once access has been provided with your consent.
4. Content and use
All content published through this newsletter — including draft extracts from the novel Twenty-Eight Years, essays, and other original writing — remains my copyright. Subscribing gives you a personal, non-commercial licence to read that content for your own use. You may not copy, republish, redistribute, or reproduce any extract or essay elsewhere, in whole or in part, without my prior written permission, including in AI training datasets, other publications, or public repositories. Quoting brief passages for discussion, review, or commentary, with clear attribution, is welcomed.
5. Comments and discussion
Where comments are enabled on posts, you agree to keep discussion respectful and relevant. I reserve the right to remove any comment, and to restrict or remove access for any subscriber, that is abusive, harassing, off-topic, or otherwise inappropriate, at my discretion.
6. A note on the novel’s content
Twenty-Eight Years is a work of fiction. While it draws on recurring patterns and themes heard across many real conversations about divorce and family breakdown over a number of years, it does not depict any real, identifiable individual, and no character, event, or relationship in the novel is a factual account of any specific person’s life. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or to actual events, is coincidental or the product of fictional composition, not intentional depiction.
7. No warranty
This newsletter is a personal, independently published project, shared in good faith and in an evolving, unfinished form. Content is provided “as is” without warranties of any kind, including as to accuracy, completeness, or that it will remain available in its current form throughout the writing process. Draft material may change substantially, be removed, or differ from any eventually published version of the novel.
8. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, I am not liable for any indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of, or reliance on, this publication. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be excluded under UK law, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
9. Availability
I aim to publish on a broadly regular schedule but make no guarantee as to frequency, and the newsletter may pause, change format, or end at my discretion, particularly around key stages of the novel’s completion or submission to literary agents and publishers. If the newsletter closes permanently, paid subscribers will be given reasonable notice and any appropriate pro-rata refund considered.
10. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and any dispute will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
11. Changes to these terms
These terms may be updated from time to time; the “last updated” date above reflects the most recent revision. Continued use of an active subscription after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
